Track 6 from Bobby Brown’s self released LP Prayers Of a One Man Band from 1982. All I know about him is that he was a street performer from Sacramento who built some kind of contraption that enabled him to simultaneously play a bunch of instruments. He had a pretty crazy vocal range, not unlike Captain Beefheart, whose voice was supposedly in the 5 or 6 octave range . Bobby’s voice could go from a super deep low rumble to an impossibly high pitched tea kettle whistle kind of thing that only grasshoppers on Jupiter can hear. If his lyrics and liner notes are any indication, he seemed to be a very sensitive spiritual fellow who was very attuned to nature with his own homespun metaphysical/spiritual philosophy which is showcased in full on his first LP from 1972, The Enlightening Beam Of Axonda, which has in between song spoken word bits which tie all the songs together with a linear story which hints at his philosophical orientation. The first album is the one that is most known among collectors and music heads. Prayers is my personal favorite though. It deserves a much larger audience and a proper reissue at the very least. Hopefully this video will help make that a reality someday soon. The liner notes of his albums indicate that he once opened for Fleetwood Mac, and that Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys and Kenny Loggins were both aware of Bobby and had an appreciation for his gifts.
